What rootstock options do you have for Allen Eureka trees?

At TreeSource, we offer Allen Eureka lemon trees in three rootstock options: Volkameriana, Macrophylla, and X639.

We have carefully selected these rootstocks for their variety of unique benefits, including:

  • Volkameriana: This rootstock is known for its vigorous growth and tolerance to a variety of soil conditions. It enhances the overall productivity and health of Allen Eureka lemon trees.

  • Macrophylla: Ideal for areas with high salinity and calcareous soils, Macrophylla rootstock provides excellent adaptability and ensures the Allen Eureka tree thrives even in challenging soil environments. This lemon tree type is very frost-sensitive and thrives the best outdoors in California coastal climates.

  • X639: This rootstock offers a good balance of disease resistance and compatibility with a wide range of soil types. It supports the robust growth and fruit quality of Allen Eureka tree species.

By offering these rootstock options at TreeSource, we ensure that our Allen Eureka trees can adapt to various growing conditions, providing you with healthy and productive lemon trees tailored to your specific needs.

Will the Allen Eureka lemon trees be easy to care for after they arrive? Is there anything special about them that we should know?

Yes, your Allen Eureka tree will be relatively easy to care for once it arrives. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

  • Planting and Soil: Ensure your Allen Eureka tree is planted in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH level (around 5.5 to 6.5). This helps the tree absorb nutrients effectively. It can grow up to 7.5, but slightly acidic is easier.

  • Sunlight: The Allen Eureka tree thrives in full sunlight, requiring at least 8-12 hours of direct sunlight daily. This is crucial for healthy growth and fruit production.

  • Watering: Regular watering is essential, especially during the growing season. Water deeply, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings to prevent root rot.

  • Fertilization: To promote healthy growth and fruiting, use a balanced fertilizer, such as an 8-8-8 formula, twice during the growing season.

  • Pruning: Prune your Allen Eureka tree to maintain its shape, remove dead or diseased branches, and improve air circulation. This helps prevent pest and disease issues.

  • Frost Protection: All lemons are frost-sensitive and don’t like temperatures below 29 degrees F. If your location is prone to cold, plant your Eureka Lemon tree in a pot the size of a ½ wine barrel. Grow it outdoors in the spring until fall, then move it to a sunny spot close to the house and string Christmas lights for use on especially cold nights. Move indoors if temps drop below 28 degrees on a routine basis, but make sure the tree gets A LOT of light. It’s not a shade-tolerant indoor plant.

By following these care guidelines, your Allen Eureka tree will thrive and produce delicious lemons. If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to contact the TreeSource team and ask!

Can we request the Allen Eureka lemon trees to be at a certain maturity level before shipping? If so, how does that work?

Here’s how it works for us at TreeSource:

Our standard for citrus liner is a 5-leaf push from the bud union. For our Small Pots, we go through a three-pinch process to ensure the tree is well-formed and ready for transplanting. Large Pots are staked high to meet our standards, providing robust support for the tree. Our Box Ready Trees are 4 years old and the most mature of what TreeSource sells. Additionally, we ensure that the roots are well-developed and will thrive in each of these four products.
