Fremont Mandarin Trees for Sale
Citrus made easy for growers, nurseries, and distributors
The Fremont mandarin represents a meaningful chapter in American citrus breeding, reflecting a period when California researchers pursued new mandarin selections that could thrive in Western growing regions while offering exceptional flavor. Released by the USDA in 1964 from a cross between Clementine and Ponkan, Fremont brought together two classic mandarin types, but it was distinctly shaped for U.S. groves, U.S. packinghouses, and U.S. consumer tastes of its era. At a time when seedless mandarins had not yet dominated the marketplace, Fremont stood out for its vivid orange peel, fragrant aromatics, and rich, balanced sweetness—qualities that helped cement early American appreciation for premium mandarins beyond the historic satsuma and Mediterranean introductions that preceded it.

The Fremont tangerine quickly became known among California citrus enthusiasts and regional fresh markets. In the Central Valley, foothills, and select coastal districts with cool autumn nights, Fremont developed excellent rind color and strong internal maturity. Its moderate tree vigor and good productivity made it attractive to growers who valued quality fruit and early- to mid-season markets. Although later seedless introductions—especially W. Murcott–type mandarins and their successors—shifted large-scale commercial plantings, Fremont maintained a loyal following among specialty growers, small-farm programs, and collectors who favored its heirloom-style eating profile.
