Variegated Calamondin Trees for Sale

Citrus made easy for growers, nurseries, and distributors

The variegated calamondin orange tree is a striking and versatile citrus variety available at TreeSource Citrus Nursery. This beautiful tree is a natural mutation, known as a sport of the standard calamondin. It features stunning marbled green-and-cream foliage and young fruit that often shows light striping before ripening to a bright orange. The tree’s unique appearance makes it a standout ornamental choice for patios, balconies, and home gardens. Although not truly an orange, calamondins are hybrids of an orange and kumquat.

Variegated Calamondin Tree FAQs

What fruit is variegated calamondin most similar to? And why should I choose this type of tree over others?

The variegated calamondin’s fruit is similar to a small, tart kumquat or tiny orange, with a thin, edible peel and a tangy, slightly bitter flavor.

This tree stands out for its striking variegated leaves and striped fruit, offering year-round ornamental appeal. It stays compact, making it ideal for containers or small spaces. It blooms and fruits multiple times a year, providing continual interest and harvest. The fruit is versatile, great fresh or in marmalades and cooking. It’s also somewhat cold-tolerant, easier to grow in mild climates.

Overall, it’s a beautiful, practical choice for gardeners wanting a manageable citrus tree with unique fruit and decorative foliage.

What growth stage are variegated calamondin trees in when shipped?

TreeSource is a wholesale supplier, so all trees are juvenile when shipped. The exception is our Box Ready Trees which are 4 years old, but their availability is limited.

What’s the difference between standard calamondins and variegated?

The main difference between standard calamondins and variegated calamondins lies in their appearance. Standard calamondins have solid green leaves and uniformly orange fruit, while variegated calamondins feature striking cream-and-green striped leaves and often have fruit with green and yellow stripes before ripening to orange.

Besides the leaf and fruit coloration, both trees share similar size, growth habits, and fruit flavor — small, tart citrus with edible peel. The variegated variety is prized more for its ornamental appeal due to its unique foliage and decorative fruit, making it especially popular for container growing and as a patio plant.

How often should variegated calamondin trees be pruned for optimal health and fruit production?

Calamondins have dense foliage and will cause the interior branches to dry out due to lack of light. If you observe this, prune out the dead branches in the spring or summer months. Calamondins also can be hedge pruned like a woody ornamental shrub. As they fruit prolifically, there is no need to prune for fruit production. Just prune them to fit your landscape as they will grow to be 20 feet tall if not pruned to fit their spot in the yard.
