Sour Orange Rootstock Seedlings: Product Overview
Also known as Citrus × aurantium, sour orange is a tree commonly used as rootstock. It originated in eastern Africa and Asia and is now widely grown throughout the Mediterranean region and parts of the western United States.
Sour orange trees, from which sour orange rootstock is cultivated, are medium to large, fruit-bearing, broadleaf, evergreen trees that can reach heights of 10 to 30 feet. The trees have smooth, brown, thorny bark, compound leaves, and are often multi-trunked. New foliage blooms from January through April, producing ½-inch flowers with slender white petals. Oranges are harvested from summer until mid-fall.
While the fruit is notably more bitter than most citrus varieties, sour orange is primarily selected as a rootstock for its vigor, adaptability, and compatibility with a wide range of citrus scions. It performs best in full sun and well-draining, consistently moist soil. Regular watering is recommended, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings to promote healthy root development.

Sour Orange Rootstock FAQs
What is sour orange rootstock?
Hardy, disease-resistant sour orange rootstock is the root system onto which citrus varieties are grafted. Sour rootstock is known for exceptional tolerance to cold, drought, and various soil types. The rootstock produces small, sour, seedy fruit that will sprout and take over if the main tree dies.
How are sour orange rootstock seedlings packaged and shipped for commercial orders?
At TreeSource, each sour orange rootstock seedling is propagated from certified budwood and grown to 12–24 inches in black recycled plastic cones. Germinated in a greenhouse that’s specifically designed for optimal rootstock production, seedlings are typically ready for propagation within 120 days during warmer months.
Commercial growers depend on TreeSource’s rigorous seedling program for successful grafting and long-term orchard performance.
When they are ready to ship out, we take extensive precautions to make sure the rootstock we so carefully grown, arrive in pristine condition, such as:
- Using heavy-duty, triple-wall cardboard cartons designed for commercial transportation.
- Removing cone liners, then cleaning and reusing them in line with sustainability practices.
- Wrapping the root system to retain moisture and reduce transit stress.
- Including an ethylene-absorbing liner to help preserve plant freshness.
When shipping during winter or to colder regions, additional safeguards include:
- Scheduling shipments early in the week to minimize delays.
- Hydrating seedlings prior to shipment to maintain a stable environment.
- Monitoring weather conditions closely and adjusting shipping schedules when extreme cold is a concern.
Thanks to this careful packaging and planning, most sour orange rootstock orders ship via UPS Ground, with expedited shipping used only when required.

How are sour orange seedlings packaged and shipped for commercial orders?
Our sour orange seedlings are packaged and shipped in durable, triple-walled cardboard boxes specially designed to protect the plants during transit.
Liners are removed from cones – before being sanitized and reused as part of our sustainability program – and root balls are wrapped in plastic to retain moisture. Each box is also lined with an ethylene-absorbing bag to help keep the plants fresh throughout their journey.
We take extra care for shipments to colder climates in winter, which include:
- Only on Mondays to minimize weekend delays and reduce transit time
- Fully hydrating seedlings before shipping, so they travel in a stable, greenhouse-like environment
- Closely monitoring weather conditions and adjusting shipment timing if extreme cold could affect plant health
With our proactive packaging and careful scheduling, most orders can safely be shipped via UPS Ground, saving the more expensive methods for severe weather.
How do you ensure the genetic consistency and quality of sour orange seedlings?
To ensure the utmost in quality, we carefully sort each seedling by size before sowing them into cones. Seedlings are grown on raised benches to promote optimal air circulation, and during cold weather, we provide bottom heat to encourage uniform growth.
We closely monitor the seedlings’ water, nutrition, and temperature throughout germination and early growth, removing weak or irregular seedlings to maintain batch uniformity.
