Carrizo Citrange Rootstock Seedlings: Product Overview
Carrizo Citrange rootstock is a hybrid of Washington Navel orange (Citrus sinensis) and Trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata), developed through the USDA citrus breeding program in the early 1900s. Carrizo and Troyer Citrange share a common origin and breeding intent and are often considered sister selections rather than fundamentally different hybrids. While Troyer was long regarded as the California standard, Carrizo gained prominence beginning in the 1980s due to its slightly greater vigor, more consistent nursery performance, and improved tolerance of warmer climates and calcareous soils.
Known for its vigorous growth and medium to large tree size, Carrizo produces early-bearing trees with excellent internal fruit quality. It offers intermediate resistance to Phytophthora root rot, tolerance to nematodes and Citrus Tristeza Virus (CTV), enhanced cold hardiness, and promotes earlier fruit color development compared to some other rootstocks.
At TreeSource, our Carrizo Citrange rootstock seedlings are propagated from certified budwood and grown as 12”–24” seedlings in black recycled plastic cones from Country Plastics. Seedlings are germinated in a greenhouse designed specifically for rootstock production and are typically ready for propagation within 120 days during warmer months. Our rigorous seedling program provides commercial growers with a reliable, high-quality foundation for successful grafting and long-term orchard performance.

Carrizo Citrus Rootstock FAQs
What is the history and origin of Carrizo Citrange, and how does it compare to Troyer Citrange?
Carrizo Citrange and Troyer Citrange share a common origin, developed in the early 1900s by the USDA citrus breeding program in Florida, primarily at the Eustis and Orlando facilities. Both rootstocks were created by hybridizing Washington Navel orange (Citrus sinensis) with Trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata) to combine tree vigor with disease resistance and cold hardiness.
Troyer Citrange was named by USDA plant breeder W.T. Swingle in 1934 after A. M. Troyer of Fairhope, Alabama, where the selection first fruited and was evaluated. . It became the California standard for decades, particularly in the San Joaquin Valley, due to its strong compatibility with navel and Valencia oranges and improved tolerance to tristeza virus compared to sour orange.
Carrizo Citrange, named after Carrizo Springs, Texas, is a separate seedling selection from the same breeding population. It eventually surpassed Troyer in many commercial plantings starting in the 1980s because it offered slightly greater vigor, better performance in warmer climates and calcareous soils, and more consistent nursery performance.
Although both rootstocks were bred in Florida, their commercial success is closely tied to California and Texas, where environmental conditions allowed them to thrive. Troyer remains historically significant, but Carrizo is now the preferred choice for modern commercial orchards due to its adaptability, consistency, and long-term performance.
What types of citrus varieties are most compatible with Carrizo Citrange?
Carrizo Citrange is compatible with most sweet orange, grapefruit, and mandarin hybrid scions. When grafted onto a compatible scion, Carrizo rootstock produces vigorous, medium- to large-sized trees with excellent internal fruit quality and early bearing. Carrizo is sensitive to pH, saline, and calcareous soils but not as sensitive as Rich 16-6 trifoliate. It is also not compatible with Eureka-type lemon varieties.
How are Carrizo Citrange seedlings packaged and shipped for commercial orders?
We ship all Carrizo Citrange seedlings in durable, triple-walled cardboard boxes designed to protect the plants during transit. Each liner is removed from its cone (which we sanitize and reuse as part of our sustainability program), and the root ball is wrapped in plastic to retain moisture. The box is also lined with an ethylene-absorbing bag to help keep the plants fresh throughout their journey.
For shipments to colder climates in winter, we take extra precautions:
- We ship only on Mondays to minimize weekend delays and reduce transit time.
- All seedlings are fully hydrated before shipping, so they travel in a stable, greenhouse-like environment.
- We closely monitor weather conditions and may adjust shipment timing if extreme cold could affect plant health.
Given our protective packaging and careful scheduling, most orders can safely ship via UPS Ground, with upgraded methods used only in severe weather.
How do you ensure the genetic consistency and quality of Carrizo Citrange seedlings?
To maintain consistent quality, we carefully sort seeds by size and prepare them before sowing them into cones. The seedlings are grown on raised benches that promote air circulation and, if needed, provide bottom heat to support uniform growth. We closely monitor watering, nutrition, and temperature throughout germination and early development, and remove any weaker or irregular seedlings to maintain uniformity across the batch.
