C-35 Citrange Rootstock Seedlings: Product Overview
C-35 citrange is an F1 hybrid of Ruby orange and Webber-Fawcett trifoliate. The first cross was made in 1951 at the University of California Citrus Research Center. C-35 citrange is known for its typical trifoliate leaves, like most F1 citrus varieties, although the tree itself is somewhat smaller and more open than other hybrids. Its season of ripeness ranges from November to January, signifying cold tolerance. C-35 citrange rootstock has tolerance to the citrus nematode (Tylenculus semipenetrans Cobb), to Phytophthora, and the tristeza virus. C-35 citrange has vigorous scions that produced adequate yields when tested.
C-35 citrange is a smaller, semi-dwarf rootstock compared to Carrizo citrange; however, it is known to produce moderate to high yields of fruit with a higher juice acid content than the Carrizo citrange. C-35 citrange rootstock is a good candidate for high-density plantings. It performs well in many soil types, although soils with a high pH, high salinity, or poor drainage are not recommended.

C-35 Citrange Citrus Rootstock FAQs
What is C-35 citrange rootstock, and what are its benefits for commercial citrus production?
C-35 citrange rootstock was bred at the University of California between Poncirus trifoliata and Citrus sinensis. The trees are semi-dwarfing, but produce cold-hardy rootstock that is high-yielding. C-35 has excellent resistance to nematodes, root rot, and tristeza virus, while producing high-quality, large fruits.
C-35 citrange is also a good candidate for commercial citrus production because trees grafted with it often yield large fruit in large quantities with high-acid juice content. It can be used to help extend the navel orange harvest season. The excellent cold and frost tolerance allows the trees to survive and thrive in cold temperatures and cooler climates without wood, leaf, or fruit damage.
How is your C-35 rootstock shipped?
While C-35 Citrange is a very coldy hardy rootstock, we apply additional protective measures to ensure our rootstock seedlings arrive to our customers in peak condition, including:
- Shipping seedlings in heavy-duty, triple-wall cardboard cartons designed for commercial transit.
- Removing liners from cones, then cleaning and reusing them as part of TreeSource’s sustainability practices.
- Securing the root system by wrapping it to retain moisture and reduce transport stress.
- Including an ethylene-absorbing liner to help maintain plant freshness during shipment.
For winter shipments or deliveries to colder regions, added safeguards include:
- Scheduling shipments early in the week to minimize delays and shorten transit time.
- Fully hydrating seedlings before shipment to maintain stable, greenhouse-like conditions.
- Closely monitoring weather patterns and adjusting shipping timelines when extreme cold is expected.
With this protective packaging and logistical planning, most C-35 rootstock orders ship via UPS Ground, with expedited shipping used only when weather conditions require it.
How does C-35 Citrange rootstock compare to Carrizo or other citrus rootstocks?
Its smaller tree size makes C-35 citrange more manageable than Carrizo while still having high yields and superior fruit quality. C-35 citrange also has a higher resistance to citrus diseases than Carrizo citrange, making it an ideal choice for commercial orchards that are focused on efficiency, consistency, and long-term productivity. It is ideal for high-density plantings and growers looking to be able to control tree size without risking the yield produced.
Which citrus varieties are compatible with C-35 citrange rootstock?
C-35 citrange rootstock is compatible with many citrus varieties. Most sweet oranges (Navel and Valencia), grapefruits, mandarins, tangerines, and Lisbon lemons are typically compatible. This wide adaptability makes C-35 a versatile and reliable choice for nurseries and commercial orchards. Trees grafted with this rootstock are best when planted in sandy soil or well-drained loam.
In suitable soil conditions, it is typically used to manage tree size and improve production. C-35 citrange rootstock seedlings do not do well in soils that have a high pH, are heavy, or calcareous. When planted in these soil types, iron chlorosis can occur.
What should distributors look for when sourcing C-35 Citrange rootstock Seedlings?
Distributors should make purchasing rootstock seedlings that are grown in a controlled environment and are certified disease-free a priority. They also need to look for rootstock that has consistent quality standards. Uniform seedling size and strong, straight trunks are other qualities to search for to ensure strong performance. Ideally, seedlings should be grown in a nursery that has minimal soil-borne pathogens.
Our nursery at TreeSource meets stringent compliance standards and has embraced regulatory measures to prevent the spread of citrus diseases. Our full-service commercial citrus nursery serves growers in the California citrus industry and around the world. Our innovation and development have led us to be a trusted leader in the citrus industry and a go-to destination for all of your citrus needs.
What is the most cold hardy citrus rootstock?
C-35 citrange rootstock is known as one of the most cold-tolerant citrus rootstocks. It is highly cold-hardy because it is a hybrid that inherited its cold hardiness mainly from its Poncirus trifoliata parent. C-35 can withstand cold and frost in addition to its resistance to citrus diseases. Additionally, C-35 citrange rootstock is deciduous, which allows it to adapt to deep dormancy during the winter to protect the tree from freezing temperatures. These traits make C-35 citrange rootstock highly resilient and a great option for commercial distributors and growers.
