Citrus Rootstock Seedlings: Product Overview

Quality rootstock seedlings are the key to a successful citrus nursery effort. Our seedlings are grown somewhat differently from other citrus nurseries. The seed is sorted by size, peeled, and sown into black plastic cones supplied by Country Plastics in nearby Woodlake, CA.

They germinate in a greenhouse explicitly designed for rootstock seedlings and are ready for propagation within 120 days of sowing in the warmer months. Uniformity is of high importance when establishing a nursery, and the container seedlings we supply are the best investment for your seedling dollar. They are grown on raised benches that can provide bottom heat if needed. The raised benches reduce the risk of disease contamination and ensure air circulation. Seedling orders must be placed at least 5 months in advance of the desired ship date.

Citrus Rootstock FAQs

Can you ship your rootstock seedlings internationally?

We do not ship our citrus rootstock seedlings internationally. Because of strict federal and state quarantines meant to stop the spread of pests and diseases like Citrus Greening (HLB) and Asian Citrus Psyllid, we’re only able to ship to 48 states — every state except Florida and Texas.

It typically takes at least 5 months to order rootstock seedlings. Are there exceptions if we have urgent needs?

There are instances where we can meet more urgent requirements. The best next step is to hit the Contact Us button in the upper right corner of your screen or call 559-592-2304 to get in touch with our team.

How do you ship rootstock seedlings?

We ship all rootstock seedlings in a durable, triple-walled cardboard box designed to protect the plants during transit. Each liner is removed from its cone (which we sanitize and reuse as part of our sustainability program), and the root ball is wrapped in plastic to retain moisture. The box is lined with an ethylene-absorbing bag that helps keep the plants fresh during travel.

For winter shipments to colder climates, we take a few extra precautions:

  • We only ship on Mondays to minimize the chance of weekend delays and ensure the plants spend as little time in transit as possible.
  • All seedlings are fully hydrated before shipment, so they travel in a stable, greenhouse-like environment inside the sealed packaging.
  • We monitor weather conditions closely and may adjust timing if extreme cold could impact plant health.

Because of this protective packaging and scheduling, most orders can safely ship via UPS Ground, unless severe weather requires an upgraded method.

What is your minimum order quantity for rootstock seedlings?

As a B2B citrus rootstock producer, we recommend that clients purchase at least 100 units. This number ensures consistency while allowing growers to trial different varieties.

Do you offer contract growing or preorder programs?

For orchards with planned growing schedules or retail businesses with seasonal citrus demand, we can arrange scheduled product reorders to fit your needs and our availability. For longer-term partnerships, we can also provide specific varieties based on your requirements and anticipated demand.

What pest management practices do you use when growing your rootstock seedlings?

Here at TreeSource, we care about sustainability, which is why we started our Bio Program in 2014. We use biological pest management methods, which are safer for our workers and better for the environment. Implementing a bioprogram can take about 3 years to establish fully, but once in place, it provides long-term protection and avoids the issues often associated with chemical resistance.
