#1: Trifoliate Rich 6-16

If your California citrus operation prioritizes high-density spacing and fruit quantity and quality, Rich 16-6 is a great choice for your commercial orchard. Unlike hybrids, this pure Poncirus trifoliata selection is famous for its high canopy efficiency and excellent fruit quality. It grows slower than Carrizo, but will ultimately grow into a larger tree, so is not dwarfing. 

Rich 16-6 slow tree vigor  significantly more than Carrizo and even C-35, making it ideal for high-density plantings, but tree removal may be necessary 10 years in the future. It consistently produces smooth-skinned fruit with somewhat higher Brix (sugar) levels than Carrizo.

Its core strengths as a citrus rootstock for commercial growers in California include:

Along with a few other historic hybrids, it served as the industry default is still considered a highly legitimate choice depending on the operation.

In California, Carrizo has enjoyed dominant regional adoption compared to other older trifoliate hybrids. It carries excellent core resistances, including solid Citrus Tristeza Virus (CTV) resistance and good Phytophthora protection.

Some limitations to consider include:

  • Vigorous tree: Carrizo makes a larger tree which means tree removal in double density plantings will come sooner than C-35 or Rich 16-6. 
  •  Soil Sensitivities: Susceptible to poor performance in calcareous soils, high pH conditions, and high salinity. Better than Rich 16-6.

C-35 is a strong performer for some citrus scions, but has been a bit controversial over the years.  It was developed by UC Riverside specifically for California conditions, which means that it has been evaluated against the soil types, disease pressures, and climate variables growers actually face in the state rather than trials from places such as Florida or Spain. 

The C-35 is a trifoliate hybrid, meaning it carries genes from the trifoliate orange. It has great traits such as:

If soil tests show elevated pH or significant lime content, even Volk may not work and a choice like X639 should be considered. . It also carries good CTV tolerance, which can keep the fruits viable where CTV is present. 

Additionally, the yield numbers for Volkameriana are hard to ignore. California lemon research has shown that the good production and soil tolerance make it a logical choice for lemon blocks on challenging ground, but does increase the frost sensitivity so is not recommended for the San Joaquin Valley. 

One drawback is that dwarfing characteristics are not a feature of the Volk due to its high-vigor rootstock. It is also more sensitive to Phytophthora that the trifoliate hybrids.
