The Tango seedless mandarin is the newest release from the breeding program of the University of California. It was released in June of 2006 and a very limited supply of budwood was provided to TreeSource.
The buds were in the form of “Grower Allocation” buds and buds from two “Father Trees” at the Lindcove Field Station. The budwood from the Mother Trees can be used for budwood multiplication or “nursery increase” and will be the source of TreeSource’s buds for trees that will be produced for 2008 and 2009. We can increase these buds for 18 months from the time of budding and during that time will likely make 500-600 trees from each Tango bud provided to us. We expect to receive more Mother Tree budwood in early July 2006, September 2006, and January 2007.
“Grower Allocation” budwood can be used to make Tango trees and was provided to citrus growers that had signed up for the Tango release. The amount of buds each grower was assigned had to do with a formula crafted by the Citrus Research Board. TreeSource has budded this first allocation of buds into C-35 rootstock in our Field Nursery operation and our Greenhouse production. We had not planned on budding any of these June buds in the greenhouse, but some of the buds were so small that we had to micro-graft them in the greenhouse to salvage them. The progress of these buds in both nurseries will be updated frequently on our Tango 2006 photo page.
TreeSource is now taking orders for 2008 on a first come, first served basis. As the weeks go by and the amount of budwood supplied to us for multiplication is known, we can project how many trees can be made for 2008 delivery. If you want to place an order contact Frank Wood at 800-992-2304 or email him at treesource@griffithfarms.com.
Trees for 2007 will be limited to the buds provided in the “Grower Allocation.” There will be another “Grower Allocation” around September 1, 2006 and if growers desire these to be trees for planting in Spring 2007, we will likely bud them into our greenhouse operation and grow them through the winter. If you are not currently on the Grower Allocation list, you have missed the sign-up deadline and cannot be added for the September allocation.
